Civilization VI

District placement commits space and resources to a plan with delayed rewards. Terrain, timing, and rivals influence whether that commitment pays off.

Base-game rules; expansion-only loyalty, disasters, and diplomatic victory are excluded.

The appeal

Guide a civilization through history using a strategy shaped by terrain and rivals.

  • settle
  • research
  • build
  • negotiate
  • explore
  • compete

Gameplay loops

Moment-to-moment loop

Inspect yields and threats → assign production or movement → end turn → evaluate consequences.

Session loop

Complete a local objective such as founding a city, building a district, or resolving a war.

Across sessions

Develop technologies, civics, cities, and alliances toward a chosen victory condition.

Mechanics

Cities occupy space
Districts place specialized city functions on map tiles; adjacency makes surrounding terrain strategically relevant. [1]
Several victory paths
The base-game manual describes multiple victory conditions and the technologies, diplomacy, and city development supporting them. [2]

A decision

A mountain-side tile offers a strong Campus location, but your frontier is exposed.

  • Build the Campus for future science.
  • Produce a defender first.
  • Found or improve another city to support both goals.

Opportunity cost connects long-term specialization to immediate survival.

What makes it interesting

Overlapping timers create anticipation. A technology, building, and unit can each be a few turns from completion, giving the next turn several unresolved promises.

Spatial development makes planning legible on the map. Players weigh which building is strongest and also where and when it is worth committing to it.

Where it can fall short

  • Long feedback delays make early mistakes hard to diagnose.
  • Many interacting rules can overwhelm a newcomer before their strategic value becomes clear.

Can two competing timers create a meaningful short-versus-long decision?

Use a ten-turn paper economy: a science building pays later, while defense prevents a forecast raid. Change the raid timing between tests.

Record whether players can explain the sacrifice and adapt when the context changes.
