The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Visible destinations, flexible skills, and optional quests give Skyrim players several ways to choose an adventure. Following a detour can also compete with the urgency of a quest already underway.
Base-game exploration and character growth; 2011 design, without mod or Creation Club assumptions.

Mechanics
A decision
A ruin interrupts your journey to a town.
Each option costs attention or preparation; none is simply the right answer.
What makes it interesting
Landmarks can turn navigation into self-directed goal selection. A detour feels authored by the player even when its content was authored by designers.
Using an ability to improve it can connect role-play to progression. Test whether players actually diversify their actions or repeat the safest action.
Where it can fall short
- Many simultaneous leads can dilute narrative urgency.
- Broad freedom does not guarantee that all builds or activities feel equally rich.
Will an optional landmark create curiosity without losing the main objective?
Build a five-minute map with one obvious destination and one visible side ruin. Compare versions with and without a distinctive silhouette.
Record voluntary detours, remembered goals, and whether the detour felt worthwhile.
