Assassin’s Creed
In Mirage, scouting, traversal, detection, and tools give players several ways to approach a defended space. Other Assassin’s Creed entries use different systems.
Series comparison anchored in Mirage’s 2023 stealth design; individual entries differ substantially.
The appeal
Read a defended place, reach a target, and leave like a skilled assassin.
- scout
- climb
- blend
- distract
- assassinate
- escape
Gameplay loops
Moment-to-moment loop
Observe guards → choose an approach → use movement or tools → respond to detection.
Session loop
Investigate a target, enter a guarded area, complete the objective, and escape.
Across sessions
Advance the story and acquire tools or upgrades that expand available approaches.
Mechanics
A decision
A guard watches the direct entrance to your target’s courtyard.
Movement, timing, and consumables are different costs a player can pay to get through the same space.
What makes it interesting
Readable patrols and connected elevations let players form plans before acting, so success can feel like carrying out a plan of their own.
A strong stealth prototype needs an understandable detection model before a large city. If players cannot predict detection, extra routes will not repair trust.
Where it can fall short
- Powerful tools can trivialize spatial puzzles if their costs barely matter.
- Automatic traversal can support fluency while reducing precision; the preferred balance depends on audience and controls.
Do three routes create different plans rather than cosmetic paths?
Make one courtyard, one guard, and one target. Offer a timed ground path, an exposed roof, and one distraction token.
Record the route chosen, the reason, detection surprises, and whether a second attempt changes the plan.
