Factorio

A shortage leads players to change a production line, which can reveal another bottleneck. Improving the factory requires understanding how its parts depend on one another.

Base-game factory automation; excludes Space Age planets and their distinct mechanics.

The appeal

Build a machine whose growing capabilities express your own understanding.

  • mine
  • connect
  • automate
  • inspect
  • research
  • defend

Gameplay loops

Moment-to-moment loop

Notice insufficient output → trace the limiting input → change the production line → measure the result.

Session loop

Automate a recipe or research chain while supplying power and protecting the factory.

Across sessions

Research technologies and scale interconnected production toward a rocket launch.

Mechanics

Automation dependencies
Wube describes mining, infrastructure, research, automation, and defense as connected parts of the game. [1]
Pressure from production
The developer’s pollution-balancing notes explain how pollution absorption and enemy attacks connect factory growth to defense. [2]

A decision

A new assembly line needs more electricity.

  • Expand cheap steam generation.
  • Invest in a different power approach.
  • Improve or reduce consumption before expanding.

Increasing throughput can create external costs; local efficiency is not the same as whole-system success.

What makes it interesting

A shortage is both feedback and a new goal. Clear input-output relationships let the player diagnose problems instead of following assigned tasks.

Automation changes what the player does. Replacing repeated manual work with infrastructure can make progression feel like increased agency, while revealing coordination problems at a larger scale.

Where it can fall short

  • Dense dependency chains can become difficult to read.
  • Enemy pressure can motivate robust design or interrupt players who primarily want construction.

Will players diagnose a bottleneck without an explicit quest arrow?

Make three machines connected by a visible resource stream. Set the middle machine to half the throughput and show input/output counts.

Observe diagnosis time, mistaken fixes, and whether clear measurements produce a better second attempt.
